British Glass Biennale

British Glass Biennale, a branding case study by design and branding studio Mytton Williams

The identity for the UK’s biggest-selling exhibition of contemporary glass had to be flexible and distinctive to meet the discerning expectations of major artists and collectors. The result is branding that remains strong over ten years later, still modern and true to the material it celebrates.

With at least 80 major new glass works selected every two years, the British Glass Biennale is the flagship exhibition within the International Festival of Glass and attracts collectors, galleries and museums from around the world. We’re proud to have been working together since 2008, initially developing and applying the brand identity across campaigns and exhibition materials. The inspiration for the identity was the magical material of glass. Speaking to makers and joining them in Stourbridge, we witnessed the wonderful abilities to reflect and refract light. The distinctive typography provides a strong design system across all exhibitions and campaigns and is still working as effectively today as it did over ten years ago when it first won design awards and increased sales. 2024 saw a massive 31% increase in applications from both established artists and emerging talent.

“Mytton Williams’ initial presentation pitch was excellent. They demonstrated a good and thorough knowledge of the process for re-branding, taking us through all the options and approaches relevant to our brief.”
